Sorry to disappoint, but I’m not familiar with some of the story and characters you have listed, jrnewto… And the basic notion you offer doesn’t really fit into my version of Killraven. It was an important element of my story that Jonathan Raven was entirely human in a universe without superheroes (...

I’m never happy with anything I do and use an eraser far more than I do a pencil.

Hi JR Rory was to have been the Scarlet Spectre . Someone at Marvel US saw some early pages and asked Marvel UK to have it changed. I thought the concern might have been that DC would object to a caped kid having an S on his chest—and said I thought that was ridiculous. After and extended exchange I...

Everything looks better on a PC screen—I wish some of the current flock of colourists would realise that. Part of the skill required in all forms of comic art is to anticipate how the image will appear in print—drawing defensively. I’ll have to see if I can find any more interesting thumbnails. Alan

Yes Paul and I keep in touch. Paul had a huge influence on my career. He gave me my first break, taught me many of the basics about storytelling, inking and the business in general. Not only did he work with Syd Jordan, he lived in the same building for a number of years-- A beautiful house in the c...

I’d much rather the £1 was equivalent to $1.40—or less but I’m not greedy.

I don’t know that there are that many UK publishers in operation? I certainly don’t have any contacts with any.

As anyone who has read Another Nail knows, there were parallel Earths in the ‘Nail Universe’ but how they fit into any multiverse would depend on the definition of a Multiverse. Logically the problem is, IF there is a Multiverse, does it overlap with other Multiverses and if so where does it/they en...

This is a very interesting question for two reasons Dave. Firstly, scale and proportion can offer all sorts of interesting design opportunities but they can also create massive problems. A few feet difference between characters adds interest but if the difference increases, as in the classic example...

Jim The Crazy Gang really originated as a sort of spoof of Batman villains crossed with the Alice in Wonderland theme. Jim Jaspers as the Joker, the Clown as the Riddler… But the idea evolved and became very different as we batted them back and forth. If the writer throws out a name and power, or ev...

Hi Jim

I have no idea about the content or form of the book. Tom DeFalco asked me to answer a few questions, which I did by e-mail.

I’m not going to try to defend Killraven’s lack of commercial success by complaining that it wasn’t promoted well enough. I always knew it was going to be a hard sell because the original series never really found a successful niche—that is, neither superhero or hard sci-fi. I think the series is am...

Obviously my casual curiosity is of no importance compared to your situation. I wish you all the very best in whatever you choose to do next.

Good luck.

Silvio, I vary the way I work to suit my mood or the material I'm working on. Thumbnails are good for planning covers or splash pages but I don't think they are a worthwhile expenditure of time on any page with more than three or four panels-- especially on a group book. I sometimes plan a page on a...

Jim, have you ever heard of something called PHOCAL board. Paul Neary introduced me to it when I first began to work in comics and I bought a supply every time I visited Paul in London from a nearby art supplies shop. After eighteen months, the shop ran out of stock. They planned to reorder until it...
